The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has urged journalists and community stations to actively participate in advocating for change in society through their reporting.
Speaking to journalists at a round-table meeting in Garissa County, MCK Meru Regional Coordinator Karanja Jackson implored the journalists to take up a proactive role as change advocates by practising solution-based journalism to elicit action.
“In today's fast-paced world, journalism plays a crucial role in shaping societies and promoting positive change. Journalists are not just observers but active participants in influencing public opinion and catalysing transformation”, said Mr Karanja at a meeting with journalists in Garissa County.
He reinforced the place of journalism as the Fourth Estate, noting that this gives journalists the power to keep the government in check over its actions, inform the public and foster a sense of accountability in society.
Warsan FM journalist Mr Abdifatahi Abdullahi said that journalists have a fundamental right to report the truth which is essential in creating an informed citizenry.
“One of the fundamental responsibilities of a journalist is to report the truth. We act as the bridge between the government, institutions and the public, making it our sole duty to ensure that information is accurate, unbiased and serves for the greater good”, said Mr Abdullahi.
The journalists were also taken through a session on accreditation where they were encouraged to register with the Council to acquire press cards as a way of fostering professionalism in the industry.
