The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has implored journalists to remain vigilant while performing their duties despite the increasing number of press freedom violations in the country.
MCK Chief Executive Officer David Omwoyo expressed his disappointment over the recent surge in press violations.
"I am disheartened by the increasing incidents of press freedom violations, targeting journalists with no action taken. You have to keep the country informed of the happenings”, said Mr. Omwoyo at the Press Freedom and Access to Information conference hosted by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation and Kenya Union of Journalists in Nairobi.
While referring to the Nakuru incident where a journalist was shot in the line of duty, Mr Omwoyo underscored the importance of a free press in a democracy and warned against the dangers of government and media collusion.
"One of the greatest threats to democracy is when the government and media are in disagreement. A free press is essential for holding power to account and ensuring transparency”, he cautioned.
“We are engaging with the National Police Service (NPS) and the Independent Policing Oversight (IPOA) to ensure that justice is served and that such violations are properly investigated and addressed”, he said.
In addition, he announced plans to undertake a country-wide debrief session for journalists covering the protests.
Friedrich Naumann Foundation Project Director for East Africa and the Global Partnership Hub Mr Stefan Schott echoed the importance of a free press in providing information to the people.
"Free media provides crucial information to the people. With the escalating threats against journalists, including abductions and pressure on media houses, we need to take decisive action to ensure the independence of journalism”, he noted.
Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo stated LSK’s commitment to protecting press freedom and supporting journalists in their pursuit of truth and justice.
“The media is our ally in upholding justice. Without the watchful eye of journalists, it would be impossible for the LSK to defend innocent citizens effectively”, stressed Ms. Odhiambo.
Kenya Editors Guild President Ms. Zubeidah Kananu appealed to the journalists not to be intimidated from performing their role as the watchdogs of the public.
"The threats we face are not limited to online harassment, there have been numerous incidents of physical attacks against journalists. Despite these dangers, we must remain steadfast in our duty to provide the public with accurate and timely information. Our commitment to journalism must not waver in the face of such adversity”, Ms. Kananu stated.
