The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has reinforced the importance of professionalism and ethical journalism in conflict reporting.

MCK Mombasa Regional Coordinator Maureen Mudi emphasised that responsible reporting is vital for mitigating conflict and promoting peace.

“Conflict-sensitive reporting plays a crucial role in fostering peace, resolving disputes, and promoting unity in communities experiencing tensions. Journalists must thoroughly verify allegations and maintain neutrality to avoid escalating conflicts”, Ms Mudi stated when she visited Vox Radio in Minjila, Tana River County.

She cautioned journalists against taking on the role of mediators, highlighting the need for objectivity and responsible storytelling.

“The media significantly shapes public perceptions. Your duty is to report, not to judge or take sides. Using language that promotes peace rather than incites violence is essential in conflict reporting”, she added.

MCK Media Analyst Momo Elkindy provided an overview of the Code of Conduct for the Practice of Journalism in Kenya, describing it as the ethical foundation of the profession.

She guided journalists through its key provisions, stressing the importance of accuracy, fairness, and accountability in conflict-sensitive reporting.

“Journalism is more than storytelling; it carries an ethical responsibility. Upholding accuracy and fairness ensures credibility and protects journalists from legal and security risks”, Ms. Elkindy noted.

Vox Radio Station Manager Maureen Buya praised the Council for its dedication to enhancing professionalism, underscoring the value of continuous mentorship and training.

Journalist Yoash Festus highlighted the complexities of conflict reporting and emphasised the need for ongoing capacity-building initiatives to support ethical and responsible journalism.
