The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has underscored the power of collaboration in amplifying voices, addressing challenges, and driving positive change for Lamu journalists and content creators.

During a meeting with journalists, media practitioners, content creators and freelancers, MCK Mombasa Regional Coordinator Maureen Mudi emphasised the importance of forging partnerships to harness collective strengths and resources to enhance the progression of Lamu’s media ecosystem.

“Lamu comes with its own set of unique challenges, and content creators, journalists and the Lamu communication team must work together to explore strategies to enhance professionalism within the media community”, said Ms Mudi.

She highlighted the significance of benchmarking with other similar successful formations within the region and learning how they offer opportunities to members of the fourth estate.

“The Council will not interfere with the running of the press clubs but will be there to support. The clubs will not only boost professionalism but also address journalists’ welfare and challenges”, said Mudi.

She urged journalists to interact with existing policies in their organisations, particularly those regarding safety and gender mainstreaming as essential components of their daily activities.

Mr. Jacob Nyongesa, Senior Officer of Research Planning and Strategy at MCK, urged journalists to maintain professionalism in their work, emphasising their role in informing, educating, and entertaining the masses.

He made a clarion call to the journalists asking them to undertake fact-checking of information to confirm its authenticity.

“We have a responsibility as journalists to ensure that all information shared is factual and verified”, said Mr Nyongesa.

The meeting focused on the deliberation of strategies aimed at enhancing public information access.
