The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has underscored the fundamental role of access to information in upholding transparency and accountability within the County Assembly.

MCK Meru Regional Coordinator Jackson Karanja emphasised that the availability of information is fundamental to the proper functioning of a democratic society.

“Journalists must have unfettered access to public information to fulfill their duty to the public”, he said so during a meeting with officials from the Department of Information Services at the Meru County Assembly.

Mr Karanja pointed out the importance of accreditation for journalists, saying it is a key contributor to upholding professional standards.

“Accreditation ensures that journalists adhere to ethical standards and maintain professional integrity. It is a crucial step in ensuring responsible journalism”, he remarked.

Meru County Assembly Director for the Department of Information Services Kevin Mwenda echoed his sentiments by acknowledging the importance of transparency in governance noting that it helps to build trust between the government and the public.

“We must ensure that relevant information is readily accessible to journalists and the public to enhance trust between our organisations and the people”, he stated.

He expressed his appreciation for the accreditation process, highlighting its role in promoting accountability while maintaining professionalism among journalists.

“Accreditation enables us to verify the credentials of journalists and ensure only reputable ones have access to the County Assembly. This measure is essential in safeguarding the integrity of our institution”, he said.
