The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has urged journalism students to prioritise building strong personal brands to advance their careers in the media industry.

This call was made during capacity-building sessions held at Tharaka University and Embu University, where students received training on professional identity and career development.

MCK Meru Regional Coordinator Jackson Karanja, speaking at the sessions, encouraged students to actively shape their professional image, emphasising the value of credibility and visibility in today’s evolving media landscape.

“Personal branding is no longer optional—it’s a necessity. Journalists who establish credibility and visibility early on gain a competitive advantage in the job market and within the industry”, Karanja noted.

He also highlighted the critical role of ethics in fostering professionalism.

“Your reputation as a journalist rests on ethics. Integrity, accuracy and objectivity are non-negotiable principles that will define your career and ensure you remain a trusted voice”, he stressed.

The sessions were designed to equip aspiring journalists with the skills and values needed to thrive in a competitive media environment while upholding the highest standards of professionalism.
