The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has urged journalists to uphold ethical standards while fulfilling their crucial role in society.
MCK CEO David Omwoyo encouraged journalists to balance their faith with their professional duties, emphasising that religious principles align with core journalistic values such as truth, fairness and accuracy.
Mr Omwoyo who spoke at an Iftar dinner hosted for Muslim media professionals in Nairobi, underscored the importance of journalistic integrity, reminding journalists of their duty to report the truth without fear or favour.
"Ethics form the foundation of our societies. It is crucial that adherence to these principles extends to our work as journalists, who serve as mirrors of society”, he said.
Mr Omwoyo also addressed criticisms directed at the media, stating that responsibility for ethical discourse lies with everyone in society, urging journalists to remain at the forefront ensuring professional coverage of matters of national interest.
“While the media plays a crucial role in shaping public discourse, journalists must be guided by professional ethics and personal values. I urge you to balance your faith with your responsibilities as members of the Fourth Estate”, he added.
Reiterating the significance of the Code of Conduct for the Practice of Journalism in Kenya, Mr Omwoyo emphasised that journalists have a moral, societal and professional duty to promote understanding rather than division.
MCK Director for Media Training and Development Mr Victor Bwire reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to supporting journalists, recalling its financial assistance to media practitioners during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He encouraged collaboration on projects that promote financial sustainability and assured journalists of MCK’s commitment to providing financial literacy training.
“We urge journalists to support one another and develop initiatives that enhance financial stability”, he said.
Muslim Media Practitioners of Kenya Chairperson Juma Namlola commended MCK for hosting the event and called for more initiatives to cushion journalists from financial hardships.
“We appreciate MCK’s engagement with Muslim journalists and encourage the Council to explore additional ways to support media professionals”, he said.
The Iftar dinner reinforced MCK’s dedication to fostering an inclusive media environment where all journalists feel supported, regardless of their religious backgrounds.
