The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has affirmed the critical role of the media in promoting blue economy, port expansion and maritime development.

MCK Mombasa Regional Coordinator Ms Maureen Mudi says the media is an instrumental tool in highlighting and framing information about the marine environment.

“The media plays a critical role in informing the public about maritime development, given the growing focus on blue economy by public actors and marine stakeholders”, said Ms Mudi during her visit to the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).

The two organisations explored areas of collaboration, including training of journalists on maritime reporting and blue economy and recognition of outstanding journalists and media houses in the field.

The sentiments were echoed by KPA Head of Corporate Affairs Mr Bernard Osero who acknowledged the need for continuous trainings on ethics, especially on effective writing and digital media campaigns to promote blue economy.

Mr Osero added that there is a need for mentorship programmes for upcoming journalists and the need to encourage them to develop the culture of reading for effective writing. He welcomed collaborations between the two organisations.

The two organisations agreed on the need to revive the KPA media fun day.
