The Media Council of Kenya joined the #KenyaWomenSeries in celebrating women who are making a difference in the society.
The event in Nairobi was officiated by the Principal Secretary, State Department of Broadcasting and Telecommunications at the Ministry of ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs Ms Esther Koimett. The PS noted the progress made in mainstreaming gender equality and commended the Media Council of Kenya for supporting women in the media.
“I commend the MCK for its deliberate efforts to support the work and representation of women in the media. I urge like-minded organisations to join hands with the Council in these efforts’’, said the PS.
MCK board Chairman Mr Maina Muiruri, stated that amid the global awakening, there is a need to advocate for women empowerment and representation. He further noted that the Council has continued to support efforts towards coverage of women stories and is partnering with various stakeholders to push women’s agenda.
“The MCK continues to support the media to professionally cover matters of public interest including issues around women and the dynamics surrounding their empowerment’’, said Mr Muiruri.
MCK Chief Executive Officer Mr David Omwoyo commended the #KenyaWomenSeries for its efforts in showcasing and advancing women’s achievements. This, he said, has promoted sectoral networking, collaboration, partnerships, and alliances emanating from the profiles, raising awareness of their professional capacity in driving the development agenda.
“I commend the #KenyaWomenSeries for showing that women are everywhere in the global ecosystem. The Council is pleased to collaborate in efforts to amplify the voices of women who are excelling in their careers in the different fields’’, noted Mr Omwoyo.
#KenyaWomenSeries is a brainchild of communications and media engagement specialist Ms Patience Nyange. Media Council of Kenya’s Manager for Press Freedom, Safety and Advocacy Ms Dinnah Ondari was among 52 women honoured at the event.
