The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has advised press clubs to explore strategies aimed at achieving financial sustainability, revenue diversification, and to collaborate with stakeholders to foster a vibrant media ecosystem.

During a meeting with officials from the Kilifi Press Club, MCK Mombasa Regional Coordinator Maureen Mudi stressed the importance of professionalism, collaboration, and sustainability as key attributes of a strong press club.

“The media environment is unpredictable, with massive layoffs and salary defaults. The press club initiative will be a vehicle that will help journalists produce and monetise content and at the same time build capacity of members through programs that enhance journalistic skills and ethics”, she said.

Ms Mudi said that the Council is dedicated to supporting press clubs throughout Kenya in efforts to improve professionalism, independence, and sustainability.

Chair of the Kilifi Press Club Mr Elias Yaa noted that the club advocates for responsible and credible journalism in the county while calling for the commissioning of a media hub.

“We call upon the Council to assist journalists in the region to have a media hub where they can operate from. Currently, Kilifi journalists are suffering and have no operating space to do their work”, Mr Yaa remarked.

He expressed their commitment to establishing a collaborative problem-solving mechanism among their members to foster a thriving press club.
