Prior to his appointment, Mr. Omwoyo was the Managing Director of Waumini Communications Limited and the Director of Communications for the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Mr. Omwoyo holds a Masters Degree in Mass Communications from The University of Leicester (UK) and is undertaking a PhD in Communications at the University of South Africa.

Commenting on the appointment, MCK Chairman Charles Kerich said: “We are pleased to bring on board Mr. Omwoyo to head the Council’s Secretariat. He brings a wealth of experience and is not new in the media industry, having worked for several years at Waumini Communications where he helped set up and manage several radio stations.”

Kerich added: “The media industry in Kenya is facing many challenges. Mr. Omwoyo will support the Council and media practitioners to address these challenges, as well as innovatively take the industry to the next level.”

Mr. Omwoyo takes over from Dr. Haron Mwangi who exited after serving in the same capacity for six years.

“I am happy to take up this new challenge as I feel strongly that I have plenty of value to add not just to the Media Council of Kenya but also to the media industry as a whole,” Mr. Omwoyo said.
